Make Your Own Booklet

An ingenious single-page folding template that teaches young creators how to turn standard paper into a multi-page booklet they bind themselves. Make your own booklet for sketching, journaling, plotting your next prank or other activities. You can also use heavyweight paper for a sturdier structure. Below are different binding options & book cover ideas for homemade booklets.

Staple Binding

Fold your pages in half and staple along the fold.

Pros: Very fast, cheap, clean-looking.
Cons: Requires a stapler that can reach the center of the booklet; staples can be sharp.

Tip: For thicker booklets, use two or three staples down the fold rather than trying to staple the entire stack at once.

Tape Binding

Stack the pages and run tape along one edge to create a spine.

You can use:

  • Clear packing tape

  • Scotch tape

  • Masking tape

  • Duct tape

  • Washi tape

  • Decorative bookbinding tape

Pros: Extremely easy and doesn't require special equipment.
Cons: The spine can become bulky, especially with thick tape.

Nice option for kids: Use colored duct tape or washi tape so the binding becomes part of the design.

Glue Binding

Stack the pages, clamp them tightly, and apply PVA/bookbinding glue along the edge.

This gives you something closer to a little paperback book.

Pros: Clean appearance, no metal pieces.
Cons: Takes longer and isn't ideal if kids will be flipping pages aggressively.

Best version: Use PVA/bookbinding glue, rather than ordinary school glue.

Glue & Tape Binding

The glue holds the pages together while the tape reinforces the spine.

Result: Much sturdier than tape or glue alone.

Hole Punch w/ Ribbon/String Binding

Similar to binder rings, but more decorative.

Punch holes and thread:

  • Ribbon

  • Baker's twine

  • Yarn

  • Paracord

  • String

Pros: Inexpensive and cute.
Cons: Pages don't turn quite as smoothly as they do with rings.

This would be especially nice for a themed or giftable activity booklet.

Sewn Binding

For a more handmade look, punch holes along the fold and sew the pages together with thread.

A simple pamphlet stitch is relatively easy and looks surprisingly professional.

Best for: Special keepsake activity books rather than making dozens quickly.
